Celtic designs include the Cross, the Knot, and the
Claddagh. You may guess that these designs originated somewhere in
Europe, by the Celts. In the case of the Claddagh, you would be correct.
This symbol is named for a village in Ireland. In the case of the Cross
(versions claimed by Irish / Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, and the
Britain islands) and Knot (a common Christian and Roman design element),
determining where they were first used gets confusing and controversial.
Whatever the case, the decision of a ring
design is personal. It should rest within your own heart
rather what others say. Today--when overlapping cultures are
the norm rather than the exception--many still wear Celtic
designs as a symbol of their heritage, but others wear the
jewelry because it symbolizes their feelings or values,
which are: the Claddagh: love, loyalty, and
friendship; the Cross: religious-based
eternity; the Knot: permanence of love and
life.
