Must you be Irish to wear a Claddagh? Not at all. While
those of Irish descent do wear them to display pride in their heritage,
there are other reasons as well. Because the symbol itself--hands protectively cupped around a
crowned heart--is said to represent love, loyalty, and friendship many
choose to wear a Claddagh for those qualities. There is even a sort of
"code" to communicate your meaning:
- The crown facing away, with the bottom
of the heart pointing toward you. (Right
Image)
- The crown facing toward you, with the
bottom of the heart pointing toward others. (Left Image)
- On the right hand, you are available.
- On the left hand, you are giving mixed
signals--married, but available (!)
